About the Department

Department of BBA started in the year 1998, with the Affiliation from Madras University. It is Affiliation from Madras University to Thiruvalluvar University in the Year of 2002. The main aim of the Department is to prepare the students to face the challenges in the business world. Department lays great emphasis on developing right attitudes, values, discipline and build student personality which is needed for service oriented career prospects. Profile Summary:

Dr Merlin Mythili Nelson is currently Director Teaching Learning Centre at MKJC for Women (Autonomous). She has a PhD in Management from Mother Teresa Women’s University, Kodaikanal, and has done her MBA from Vellore Engineering College (Madras University) along with postgraduate degrees in English (Madras University) and Human Rights (Pondicherry University).

In her twenty-five years of academic and research experience, Dr Merlin Mythili has worked as Lecturer at Auxilium Collge, Lecturer and HOD at Marudhar Kesari Jain College for Women, Lecturer at VIT Business School, Vellore Institute of Technolog. She went on to become Associate Dean (Academics) at IILM Institute for Higher Education, New Delhi and later served as Associate Professor and PGDM Programme Head at Rajalakshmi School of Business, Chennai. She has been on a faculty exchange programme to the School of Management, University of Bradford, UK and has taught in their offshore Undergraduate and Postgraduate Degree Programmes at IILM in India.

[1]	Relative importance of various sources of information for equity investment decisions: A demographic study of Indian Investors Bhatia, M & Nelson M. M. In International Journal of Business Excellence , , Aug 2025, Volume: 36 No. 4, Page: 507. Abstract [+] The purpose of this paper is to comprehend the relative importance of various sources of information that different groups of investors rely upon while making investment decisions. The paper puts forth the specific significance of certain sources that might help understand the investor psyche of the various investor groups. Questionnaire-based survey research was conducted and responses of 276 respondents were analysed using descriptive statistics and non-parametric tests. The study reveals that while women investors relied more on advice from family, friends, and stockbrokers; investors who worked within the financial investment sector, preferred personal knowledge of the company and analysis and investors who took greater risks, made higher investments and stayed longer holding their stocks relied more on analytical decision-making based on corporate reports. These findings emphasise the benefits of investor profiling according to the various demographics and how it can help investment advisory firms to approach different investor groups.
[2]	Impact of Organizational and Supervisory Support Perceptions on the Turnover Intentions of Working Mothers-to-Be: A Study of the Indian IT Sector. Agarwal, B. & Nelson, M. M. In International Journal of Business Analytics, , Dec 2023, Volume: 10(1), Page: 1-15. Abstract [+] The purpose of the paper is to examine the various factors that influence turnover intentions of working women at the threshold of motherhood. The impact and interrelationships of variables like organisational and supervisory support perceptions, flexible-work-options, work-family conflict, job and family satisfaction, and their effect on turnover intentions are examined. A questionnaire survey of 203 working women of three categories—women undergoing infertility treatment, pregnant women, and new mothers of the Indian IT sector—was conducted and hypotheses tested through structural equation modelling. Results validated the model developed and confirmed the causal relationships whereby employees working in family-supportive work environments experienced lower levels of work-family conflict, and reduced work-family conflict thereby led to greater job and family satisfaction followed by lesser turnover intentions. The study reiterates the need for organisations to offer specific policies that allow working-women to continue their careers as they go through motherhood.
[3]	The Rigmarole of Negotiating Double Binds: A Qualitative Study of Indian Women Academics’ Work-from-home Routines in COVID-19 Times. Nelson, M. M., & Agarwal, B. In South Asian Journal of Business and Management Cases, , Nov 2023, Volume: 12(3), Page: 372-389. Abstract [+] This study explores how Indian women academics navigated the responsibilities of home, care and paid academic work during the COVID-19 pandemic through the intersectional lens of gendered family role identity and work–home boundary theory. Using a qualitative interpretivist approach and thematic analysis, 30 women academics were interviewed on their work-from-home experiences. The findings show that women struggled to negotiate the increased work–family conflict due to reinforced gendered family role expectations and increasing invasion of work into home space. The study reveals the double bind whereby women are caught wanting to excel both at work and home. Flexible work options may not help Indian working women to achieve work–family balance due to the continued devaluing of care work and the subservient social status of women within the Indian family structure. Despite educational upliftment and financial independence, gender remains at the bottom of the intersectionality of various types of inequalities that affect Indian women academics.
[4]	Support perceptions, flexible work options and career outcomes: a study of working women at the threshold of motherhood in India. Shanmugam, M. M. & Agarwal, B. In Gender in Management: An International Journal, , , Jun 2019, Volume: 34 (4), Page: 254-286. . Abstract [+] Purpose This study aims to explore the leaky pipeline issue (attrition of working women due to motherhood) in the Indian information technology (IT) sector. The study analyses the effect of organisational and supervisory support perceptions on the use of flexible work options and its relationship with career outcomes in terms of job satisfaction, work-life conflict and turnover intentions. Design/methodology/approach A survey questionnaire to test the hypotheses was returned by 203 working women of the Indian IT sector belonging to three categories, namely, women undergoing treatment for infertility, pregnant women and women who had recently given birth at the time of the survey. Findings The findings state that the use of flexible work options significantly reduce work-life conflict, decrease the intention to turnover and increase job satisfaction, with organisational and supervisory perceptions playing a significant moderating role. Research limitations/implications The findings are based on self-reported responses. Nevertheless, the study provides insights into the work-life priorities of Indian women at the time of motherhood and opens up specific research opportunities to address the leaky pipeline due to pregnancy and childbirth. Practical implications Organisations should take genuine initiatives to effectively use the flexible work options and provide supervisory training for increased sensitivity to help reduce role conflict and let working women make informed choices in their careers and lives at the time of childbirth. Originality/value The paper could be the first known paper to study this special category of working women at the threshold of motherhood in the Indian IT sector.
[5]	Exploring Autonomy through Time Structuring 5. Shanmugam, M. M. In The South Asian Journal of Transactional Analysis , , Jan 2019, Volume: 5(1), Page: 61-68. . Abstract [+] Merlin Mythili has explored how she has uncovered her tactics of structuring her time, to best suit her ability to interact socially. In this personal narrative, she unravels the Transactional Analysis concept of basic hungers, as she explains how they play out for her and why. Merlin then associates these hungers with how she spends her time and mingles or keeps away from others. Her exploration leads her to understand the psychological games she plays, wittingly or unwittingly and their outcomes. Armed with this knowledge, the author shares her way of accepting erself, using her time with heightened awareness and striving for autonomy, much like a natural child.
[6]	Impact of parenthood on women’s careers in the IT sector – a study in the Indian context. Shanmugam, M. M. In Gender in Management: An International Journal, , , May 2017, Volume: 32(5), Page: 352-368. Abstract [+] Purpose The purpose of this study is to analyse the impact of certain factors (such as working mothers’ attitudes towards career role salience, notion of career success, work-life balance and the impact of organisational support systems available for childcare) on career persistence, despite parenthood, and career re-entry after parenthood. It is conducted in relation to new age, young working mothers of the booming IT sector in India. Design/methodology/approach A survey questionnaire was administered to 138 working mothers in the IT sector to analyse the impact of working mothers’ career role salience, notion of career success, work-life balance and the impact of organisational support systems available for childcare on career persistence, despite parenthood. Findings The findings state that re-entry is also a growing phenomenon, in as much as career breaks are an accepted reality. Career role salience and notions of career success are important predictors of career re-entry of young mothers. Most importantly, this study highlights the significant role of the trusted, extended family support system, that is characteristically unique to Indian social fabric, in enabling women’s career persistence and career re-entry after motherhood. Research limitations/implications Like most survey research, this study’s validity is also limited to the findings on the self-reported responses. Nevertheless, the study points to new areas to be researched, such as the possibility of the same findings with older mothers who have spent considerable years in their careers, or whether the same sample would answer differently after a few years. Practical implications The paper includes implications for society and organisations, concerning opting out, and for undertaking genuine initiatives to enable and support women to re-enter their careers after breaks, so that the decision to persist, exit or re-enter their careers remains the privileged choice of women employees. Originality/value The paper fulfils an identified need to study how parenthood affects women’s careers in the IT sector and need for organisations in India to understand the practicality of women employees’ needs to integrate work and life.

Abstract [+] Until recently, the traditional career advancement model, with an emphasis on full-time, long-term organizational employment and extensive commitment to one’s organization, has always formed the basis for studying gender issues in organizations (Valcour & Ladge, 2008). In the context of today’s knowledge driven economy, today’s modern organization is more characterized by downsizing, constant competitive pressures, democratization of work life, decreased job security, increased workforce diversity, expanding use of outsourcing and part- time and temporary employees (Sullivan and Baruch, 2009) . Moreover, there is evidence of poignant changes in individuals’ attitude towards their careers due to many factors like increasing life spans and work lives; changing family structures; including the increasing number of dual-career couples, single working parents, and employees with eldercare responsibilities; and an ever-growing number of individuals seeking personal growth and development rather than seeing jobs in the traditional light of earning livelihood (Sullivan, 2010). All these factors have made individuals (irrespective of gender, age, ethnicity) to rethink their career outcomes and thereby to initiate self-directed careers (Tharenou, 2009). Many individuals have begun choosing lateral, or even downward, job moves to fulfill personal needs (Hall, Gardner & Baugh, 2008). This paper aims to study the Inclusion support provided by Indian Organizations in the IT sector to women at various stages of their career specially their reentry after parenthood. Abstract [+] Manpower guidance is simply guiding and directing the employees and workers regarding the sector’s work. It typically deals with coordinating, motivating, controlling, directing of the various activities within the company or industry. The guidance refers to providing essential information by person with more experience to a new comer or fresher or existing employees to solve a problem or improve something. The guidance refers to the process of helping workers and employees to discover and develop their potentiality in their work or workplace. Further, manpower guidance helps in the development of workers or employees on their skills. On the other side manpower guidance helps in training the people in the workplace to achieve an optimal level of knowledge and skills in what they do. They become a updated by enhancing their mind. Moreover, an individual or worker or employees whomever receives proper guidance would surely contribute well to the company. A properly guided individual would be able to develop themselves into a better version and can shape them better. The principal of guidance certainly form the basis of the need of Manpower guidance. Guidance must take the all-round development of the person. Guidance involves personal help given by someone; which means to assist the person in working. It also assists him to solve problems that arise in work. The purpose of manpower guidance is to promote the growth of both individual and company by proving the employees a better training. Rakini In Shri Lai Bahadur Shastri Rashriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha, Marudhar Kesari Jain College for Women, Vaniyambadi, Jun 2023, Volume: XXI, Page: 12- 18. Abstract [+] The current study, which will be organized in light of previous research, aims to investigate issues facing college students. The study aimed to determine the views of college students regarding their issues of accommodation and nutrition, coping and orientation, anxiety about the future and unemployment, and educational attainment. For research purposes, data should be collected using questionnaires and personal information sheets prepared after consulting relevant literature. The study sample consisted of 320 randomly selected students studying at the college of during the 2019-2020 academic years. Studied according to faculty and gender variables. Regarding the obtained results, the views of the selected students in the two faculties about the problems they encountered during their college studies will be compared. The obtained data will be analyzed using the program SPSS. Key Words: College Students, Covid Issue, Education.

In wide-ranging growth of economy in each and every area market face competition. The increase of competition in an economy will create more avenues and opportunities for the HR. Today the most important challenge companies’ face is maintaining resources as well as retaining them in organization. The organizations play important role in securing employees and retaining skilled employees in the organization. The employees’ knowledge and skill are central for organization, their competence and they contribute for the growth of economy. Satisfying employees is very important because it motivates and encourages them to face the challenges in the organization. The retention plays the most significant role in any company. This study tries to research the facts given by various literatures related to employee retention and also factors that have an effect on the employee retention and process achievement a number of the employees. Abstract [+] In this article the effort is to find the challenges of identifying the best pooled talents and its retention in today’s Global business scenario. This helps to understand the importanceof identifying talents and its retention. This enables to develop global business scenario. It discusses about various challenges faced by the employer and the employees. It discusses about the possibilities to reduce expenses which can help in overcoming the challenges in the organization by identifying quality candidates and long lead time.Other areas that are looked up on open position to fill pressure, managing job posting,collaborating with coworkers, spending time on non-hiring tasks etc. The best suggested method is to hire ring methods which could be effective for managing the challenges. [5]	A Research on Employee Retention in Sacred Heart College (Autonomous), Tirupattur Dr. A. Rakini In Blue Eyes Intelligence Engineering & Sciences , Marudhar Kesari Jain College for Women, Vaniyambadi, Dec 2019, Volume: 9, Page: 436-439. Abstract [+] Abstract---Many colleges experience increase in attrition and it has great impact on the performance of the colleges. Objective of this study is to find why employee are leaving their job and propose retention initiatives. The research instrument used to obtain data was questionnaire. A total 200 employees are there in the college. By using random sampling a total of 140 employees were interviewed using questionnaires. Correlation analysis is used to test the inter correlation between the variable. Correlation result shows that the two variables of motivation and job satisfaction were correlated with employee retention in the college. Same tool has been used to determine the relationship between the variables namely the relationship of the management with the staff and the factors influencing this relationship to grow stronger. Results indicate attrition is associated with compensation provided for the additional working hours to the staff and their selection process. These findings clearly indicate that in order to retain the best talented employees in the college, taking care of the employees by having good relationship with them is a must.
