About the Department

The Biotechnology is an interdisciplinary science that combines the biological sciences and an innovative technology, which harnesses and nurtures specific skill sets that integrates life science and technology. The curriculum is constantly upgraded to suit the demands of the industry.

The Department of Biotechnology established in 2007 with B.Sc. Biotechnology and M.Sc Biotechnology in 2014. The Department upgraded to Research Department with M.Phil Biotechnology in 2018 and Ph.D Full/Part-time in 2019 with a well-structured and balanced curriculum focusing on the major areas of life science which includes applications in Biological, Agricultural, Environmental, Clinical and Industrial products including the commercial exploitation of microbes, plants and animals. The Department has well equipped laboratory facility to perform Research in different areas of Biology.

Abstract [+] The mud crab Scylla serrata (Forskål, 1775) is a highly abundant and economically important species throughout coastal India. Cryptocyanin plays an important role during the moult cycle of brachyuran crabs, and the presence of cryptocyanin and haemocyanin in oocytes, embryos, and zoeas of various species suggests that cryptocyanin is available from the very early stage of cuticle formation in development. Cryptocyanin is highly similar to haemocyanin in structure, but it is a copper-free enzyme that lacks an oxygen-binding capacity. Cryptocyanin has furthermore been reported as an important factor in immunity in crustaceans. The precise molecular weight of the cryptocyanin protein from gill tissues of S. serrata (79.11 kDa) is reported with the help of the matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrophotometry (MALDI-MS) technique.

Abstract [+] Interleukin-28B (IL28B) locus on a human chromosomal region mapped to 19q13 execute immune defense against viruses. During Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) infection the IL28B has a promising role in deciding the consequence of infection for spontaneous clearance of viruses or causing chronic liver infection. Treatment of chronic hepatitis C includes use of direct acting antivirals, Pegylated-Interferon (PEG-IFN) and Ribavirin (RBV) therapy. Also, interferon free regimens are suggested to be useful in resistant patients. Numerous reports including Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS), comprehensive meta-analysis and independent case-control studies in different population have revealed the association between certain Il-28B polymorphisms and response to the PEGIFN- RBV therapy in patients infected with HCV.

Abstract [+] Tumor suppressor p53 is a critical player in the fight against cancer as it controls the cell cycle check point, apoptotic pathways and genomic stability. It is known to be the most frequently mutated gene in a wide variety of human cancers. Single-nucleotide polymorphism of p53 at codon72 leading to substitution of proline (Pro) in place of arginine (Arg) has been identified as a risk factor for development of many cancers, including nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). However, the association of this polymorphism with NPC across the published literature has shown conflicting results. We aimed to conduct a case–control study for a possible relation of p53 codon72 Arg4Pro polymorphism with NPC risk in underdeveloped states of India, combine the result with previously available records from different databases and perform a meta-analysis to draw a more definitive conclusion. A total of 70 NPC patients and 70 healthy controls were enrolled from different hospitals of north-eastern India. The p53 codon72 Arg4Pro polymorphism was typed by polymerase chain reaction, which showed an association with NPC risk. In the meta-analysis consisting of 1842 cases and 2330 controls, it was found that individuals carrying the Pro allele and the ProPro genotype were at a significantly higher risk for NPC as compared with those with the Arg allele and the ArgArg genotype, respectively. Individuals with a ProPro genotype and a combined Pro genotype (ProPro+ArgPro) also showed a significantly higher risk for NPC over a wild homozygote ArgArg genotype. Additionally, the strength of each study was tested by power analysis and genotype distribution by Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium. The outcome of the study indicated that both allele frequency and genotype distribution of p53 codon72 Arg4Pro polymorphism were significantly associated with NPC risk. Stratified analyses based on ethnicity and source of samples supported the above result.
[4]	Hydropericardium syndrome: current state and future developments (Review) Asthana M, Chandra R and Kumar R. In Archives of Virology, , Dec 2012. Abstract [+] Hydropericardium syndrome (HPS) is a highly infectious disease caused by fowl adenovirus serotype 4 (FAV-4) affecting poultry, especially broiler birds. The disease was initially reported from Angara Goth, Pakistan, and then from India during 1994, in the poultry belt of Jammu and Kashmir, and thereafter, from almost all parts of the country, causing heavy economic losses to the poultry industry. The disease occurs predominantly in broilers of the age group of 3-5 weeks, characterized by sudden onset of high mortality up to 80 %. The causative agent of HPS is fowl adenovirus 4, which is a member of the species Fowl Adenovirus C, genus Aviadenovirus, family Adenoviridae [60]. FAV-4 is non-enveloped and icosahedral in shape, measuring 70-90 nm in size and containing a linear dsDNA of approximately 45 kb in size as its genome. The livers of affected birds show necrotic foci and basophilic intranuclear inclusion bodies in the hepatocytes. The disease can be diagnosed from its gross and microscopic changes in the liver and by various serological tests, such as agar gel immunodiffusion, counterimmunoelectrophoresis, indirect haemagglutination, fluorescent antibody techniques, and ELISA. In the past few years, PCR has been used as a rapid diagnostic tool for the detection of fowl adenoviruses. The disease has been brought under control by the use of formalin-inactivated, attenuated or live vaccines in experimentally infected birds. Advancement in the field of computational immunology accelerates knowledge acquisition and simultaneously reduces the time and effort involved in screening potential epitopes, leading toward the development of epitope-based vaccines.
[5]	Isolation, cloning and In silico study of hexon gene of fowl adenovirus 4 (FAV4) isolates associated with Hydro pericardium syndrome in domestic fowl Asthana M, Singh V, Kumar R and Chandra R. In J. Proteomics and Bioinformatics, , Jan 2011. Abstract [+] Hydropericardium syndrome is an important emerging disease of domestic fowl caused by fowl adenovirus serotype 4 (FAV-4). The full length hexon gene was isolated by PCR from the three virus isolates and it has been possible to clone hexon gene from all the three isolates into pGEM-T Easy vector, sequenced and analyzed using online bioinformatics tools (ExPASy server). The sequences were submitted to NCBI Gen Bank. These sequences showed significant homology with FAV-4 hexon gene sequences available in the NCBI Gen Bank and also found to be clustered with FAV-9 and FAV-10 serotypes. Probable secondary structures were also studied and compared using on line ExPASy servers. Possible B-cell epitopes were also predicted using on line ABCpred server and their position on the 3D structure of the proteins were also studied.
[6]	Isolation and identification of a fowl adenovirus from wild Black Kites (Milvus migrans) Kumar R, Kumar V, Asthana M, Shukla S.K. and Chandra R In J. Wildl. Dis., , , Jan 2010. Abstract [+] A fowl adenovirus was isolated from wild Black Kites (Milvus migrans) that died around Kashipur, Uttarakhand, India. This virus isolate produced cytopathic effects in chicken embryo liver (CEL) cells and reacted with fowl adenovirus 4 (FadV-4) antiserum in agar gel immunodiffusion and immunofluorescence tests. The virus isolate was neutralized by FadV-4 antiserum with a neutralization titer of 800. Electron microscopy of infected CEL cells showed the presence of hexagonal virion particles measuring in size about 80–100 nm. An amplicon of 1,223 base pairs was detected using polymerase chain reaction with primers designed to target the hexon gene of FadV-4.
